Today - 27 September 2025 - is exactly 200 years since the first steam-powered passenger train went between Stockton and Darlington. Steam was the power source, but the energy source was coal and the train industry that quickly spread across the British empire marks the beginning of large-scale coal use. So we are 200 years into the age of coal, about 100 years into the age of oil and perhaps 75 years into the age of natural gas.
