Sven Treitel Passed on Eclipse Day 2024

Update 18 Apr: A Society of Exploration Geophysicists Leading Edge article for Sven is in the works by Kurt Marfurt and others.

------
Update 15 Apr: There was a small private ceremony for Sven in Tulsa on Friday 12 April. I was invited to say a few words on behalf of Sven's geophysical friends (impossible task!) and told them about your global outpouring of affection and respect for Sven. Anyone wishing to make a commemorative donation in Sven's behalf can consider these options:
(1) Sven Treitel Graduate Student Support Fund, Dept of Earth and Planetary Sciences, MIT https://giving.mit.edu/
(2) Chamber Music Tulsa, PO Box 14560, Tulsa, OK 74159
(3) Home of Hope, PO Box 903, Vinita, OK 74301
The family is hopeful that a commemorative article about Sven will be published by his professional colleagues as a tribute of his scientific achievements and honors.

10 Apr 2024: I am very sad to report that my long-time friend and mentor Sven Treitel passed in Tulsa, Oklahoma on the day of the eclipse (5 Mar 1929 - 8 Apr 2024). There is too much to write about this amazing man, so I will only use this space to say that after the eclipse the world came back somehow dimmer than before. Rest in Peace.

A favorite story of Sven is my PhD defense at Colorado School of Mines when he happened to be on campus in attendance (along with Dave Hale and Ken Larner, good Lord). Someone asked how my work related to tomography, then a newish topic. At a loss for ideas, I said "Well we're lucky to have Sven Treitel here who is a world expert on the subject perhaps he could say a few words." In his characteristic way Sven leaned back with his fingertips characteristicly forming a pyramid, and said smiling "Yes, I could, but I already have my PhD."

I never had the honor of working with or for Sven in a company, but was delighted to work with him in many other ways.
